Shortly after 5 a.m., OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said police received a report of a collision in the westbound lanes of the highway in Pickering near Brock Road.
He said one vehicle was traveling eastbound in the westbound lane, resulting in a head-on collision.
One 55-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, Schmidt said. Two other drivers, including the one driving in the wrong direction, were taken to the hospital and are still there.
The westbound lanes of Highway 401 near Brock Road in Pickering will be closed most of the morning, he said. By noon, the lanes will be free again.
